According to a press release from SMS group, the Paul Wurth design at MMK’s Blast Furnace 11 replaces a portion of its solid carbon fuel with “syngas,” a blend of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, injected into the furnace shaft.
 
“The degree of emissions reduction possible from this technique is potentially substantial,” commented Thomas Hansmann, SMS group’s head of metallurgy and Paul Wurth’s chief technology officer.
 
What’s more, the new syngas technology can be retrofitted to existing blast furnaces, allowing older furnaces to reduce carbon intensity, SMS said.
 
MMK placed the order for the blast furnace last June. In September, SMS group and MMK signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding to develop sustainable steelmaking technologies.
