According to ABB, the mill’s caster will be widest ever equipped with its Flow Control (FC) Mold system. The caster will produce slabs of up to 305 mm in thickness and 3,150 mm in width.

“Having enjoyed a productive relationship with SMS group for many years, this is our first order for Nucor Brandenburg and our first U.S. order for FC Mold,” said Anders Lehman, ABB’s vice president for metallurgy products. “The facility’s very wide casting format is challenging, but in addition to improving slab quality, FC Mold will also help optimize its operation significantly,” he said. 

ABB said the FC Mold system is in use in more than 40 plants worldwide. The system allows for higher casting speeds and fewer defects, rejects and downgraded products.
