Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) reports that the order book for its new 5000-mm Plate Mill is 100% full.
The Plate Mill produced 127,000 tonnes in January 2011, compared to 112,000 tonnes in December 2010. The mill's full capacity is estimated at 1.5 million tons per year.
"MMK's strategy is aimed at creating a state-of-the-art production complex and diversifying into new HVA products, primarily for the Russian market. The 5,000 mm Plate Mill built at MMK is the largest scale project implemented in the Russian steel sector in the past decade," said Victor Rashnikov, Chairman of the MMK Board of Directors.
Commissioned in the summer of 2009, the 5000-mm Plate Mill uses both high- and low-temperature rolling technologies. It is capable of producing plate of different gauge and width, meeting the stringent requirements set by large-diameter pipe manufacturers.
The Plate Mill’s key customers include Chelyabinsk Pipe-Making Plant, Volzhsky Pipe Plant, Vyksa Steel Works, and a number of domestic mechanical engineering and shipbuilding companies and boiler manufacturers.
MMK is among the world's largest steel producers and is one of the leaders of Russia's steel industry. The company's operations in Russia include a large steel producing complex encompassing the entire production chain. MMK turns out a broad range of steel products with a predominant share of higher value added products. In 2010 MMK Group produced 11.4 million tonnes of crude steel and 10.2 million tonnes of commercial steel products. The MMK Group's revenue in 2009 totaled USD 5.081 billion, with EBITDA at USD 1.285 billion, and the profit for the period, at USD 219 million.
