New Green Hydrogen Plant Project to Support British Steel’s Decarbonization
03/14/2022 - Last week British Steel Ltd. celebrated the launch of a hydrogen electrolyzer plant project near its Teesside, U.K., steel works that will eventually provide the steelmaker with a local source of renewable green hydrogen for net-zero steel production.
The Tees Green Hydrogen plant is a joint project of British energy companies EDF Renewables UK and Hynamics. According to EDF’s official press release, Tees Green Hydrogen will power its electrolyzer using renewable electricity sourced from local wind and solar farms. Stage 1 of the plant will see the installation of a 30–50 MW electrolyzer, but the plant developers intend to scale up hydrogen production to over 500 MW.
“We welcome the news about the hydrogen plant project on Teesside and look forward to early collaboration with EDF Renewables,” said Matt Stockwell, manager of British Steel’s Teesside operations, in a statement. “This development will allow us to explore innovative technology options that could support the implementation of our Low-Carbon Roadmap and our ambition to deliver net-zero steel by 2050.”
