New Cold Mill to Expand Nucor's Lineup of Specialty Steels
09/23/2016 - Nucor Corp. will add a US$230 million cold-rolling mill to its Arkansas sheet mill, giving it the ability to make some new, higher-value products, the company has announced.
Nucor said the mill, which is to be up and running in approximately two years, will produce advanced high-strength steel; high-strength, low-alloy steel; and motor lamination steel.
"This specialty cold mill complex supports our strategy of moving up the value chain and growing sales to the automotive market," said Nucor chairman and chief executive John Ferriola in a statement.
"It will bring value to all of Nucor's sheet mills by expanding our capability to produce advanced high-strength steels and broadening the automotive capability of our galvanized lines at Nucor Steel Decatur and Nucor Steel Berkeley."
Nucor said it is installing the cold mill at the Arkansas plant because the location gives the company a transportation advantage over competitors who are outside the region but supply the local market and the growing Mexican market.
"We are excited to bring this expansion to Arkansas that will enable us to efficiently produce products beyond that of any North American mill," said MaryEmily Slate, Nucor Steel Arkansas’ vice president and general manager.
The mill is expected to create 100 jobs.
