New ArcelorMittal Project to Provide 24/7 Renewable Energy in India
03/22/2022 - ArcelorMittal has partnered with energy company Greenko Group to design and install 975 MW of “around the clock” wind and solar capacity in India, according to an official press release.
The US$600 million project will be built in Andhra Pradesh in southern India. The project will make use of Greenko Group’s hydro pump storage technology, which “helps to overcome the intermittent nature of wind and solar power generation,” ArcelorMittal said.
In addition, ArcelorMittal joint venture AM/NS India will receive 250 MW of uninterrupted renewable power per year from the project as part of a 25-year purchase agreement. The move is expected to lower AM/NS India’s annual emissions by 1.5 million metric tons.
“This is a pioneering partnership with the world’s leading steelmaker and we hope it will serve as a blueprint for the adoption of renewable power for large-scale steel manufacturing in India,” commented Greenko chief executive and managing director Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty.
