Multiple Offers on Table for U. S. Steel

The Reuters news service reported yesterday that ArcelorMittal is discussing the possibility of making an offer for United States Steel Corporation, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Earlier this week, Cleveland-Cliffs put in an offer of US$7.3 billion to buy out U. S. Steel. In a press release, U. S. Steel rejected the offer from Cleveland-Cliffs and also announced its intent to conduct a strategic review of “multiple unsolicited proposals” received for the company.

Pittsburgh, Pa.-based Esmark then put in a cash bid of its own at US$7.8 billion. According to Reuters, a U. S. Steel spokesperson said Esmark “could pursue it by participating in a process it announced on Sunday for exploring a potential deal with interested parties.”
