MSCI: North American Service Center Growth Resumes in September
10/17/2014 - Year-over-year growth in steel and aluminum service center shipments resumed in September 2014 in both the United States and Canada, according to the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI).
U.S. Service Center Activity
U.S. service center steel shipments in September 2014 increased by 8.3% from September 2013. Steel product inventories increased 16.4% from September a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents 2.6 months of supply in inventory.
In September, U.S. service center shipments of aluminum products increased by 10.2% from the same month in 2013. Inventories of aluminum products increased 12.4% from September a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents 3.0 months of supply in inventory.
Canadian Service Center Activity
Canadian service center shipments of steel products in September 2014 increased by 4.1% from September 2013. For 2014 year-to-date, steel shipments were essentially unchanged from the same period in 2013.
Steel product inventories increased 16.5% from September a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents 3.1 months of supply in inventory.
In September, Canadian service center aluminum shipments increased 15.8% from the same month in 2013. Inventories of aluminum products increased 15.5% from September a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents 2.8 months of supply in inventory.
