Morgan Construction Co. has installed and commissioned a major upgrade for the Sterling Steel Co., LLC single-strand rod mill in Sterling, Ill.
The mill, which had been shut down, was formerly owned and operated by Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. It was purchased in 2002 by Sterling, a subsidiary of Leggett & Platt. Now on line, the mill has the capacity to produces 400,000 tons annually for Leggett’s wire drawing plants.
Morgan’s scope of supply comprised design, manufacture, and installation of a new Stelmor® Controlled Cooling Conveyor and high-capacity MorAir cooling fans. Morgan also provided electrical motors, drives and controls, as well as turnkey installation of the equipment.
The new Stelmor conveyor and fans give Sterling the ability to produce rod with extremely tight metallurgical properties, resulting in higher rod quality, more efficient wire drawing, and increased throughput. Finished products will be used by other operations of Leggett & Platt, a diversified manufacturer of a broad variety of engineered components and products.
