Mittal Steel Saldanha, South Africa, contracted More srl, Italy, to install the Catfis automatic temperature and sampling manipulators in their twin-shell ConArc electric arc furnaces.

The Catfis equipment will be utilized for temperature/carbon/oxygen/sample measuring through the slag door. The system has been developed to improve operator safety and eliminate manual operation in front of the slag door. The Catfis manipulators also help to reduce transformation costs through process optimization and reliable measurements.

The two Catfis manipulators are scheduled for startup in the third quarter of 2005.

Mittal Steel Saldanha is a state-of-the-art mill with a combined Corex/Midrex process into a continuous casting chain. The meltshop has a design capacity of 1.4 million tons per year. Thin and ultra thin gauge material makes up the majority of final product.
