More Layoffs Underway at U. S. Steel Corp.
09/18/2015 - United States Steel Corporation is laying off employees at its Pittsburgh, Pa., USA, headquarters, the Pittsburgh Business Times newspaper reported.
According to the newspaper, the steelmaker confirmed that cuts have been made, but declined to say how many have been let go or which business areas are affected.
"We continue to adjust our headcount to align with our operational and business needs," U. S. Steel spokeswoman Sarah Cassella said in a statement.
In August, U. S. Steel said it would permanently shut down the blast furnace at its Fairfield Works in Alabama and lay off 1,100 employees. And earlier this year, it issued lay-off warnings to 9,000 production workers, though not all lost their jobs, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review newspaper.
