MMK Upgrades Soviet-Era Hot Strip Mill
06/04/2020 - Russia’s Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works has commissioned an overhauled hot strip mill at its facility, reports project contractor SMS group.
According to SMS, the work on hot strip mill 2500 at the Magnitogorsk site entailed installation of new hydraulic adjustment systems and work roll bending systems on the finishing stands; new equipment for changing work and backup rolls; a new high-pressure hydraulic system for the finishing stands; and the installation of SMS group’s X-Pact®automation system.
“SMS group furthermore renewed the drive technology of the finishing mill and supplied six main drives including converters, two new spur gears and six mill pinion gear units as well as new drive spindles,” the company said.
The goal of the project was to expand the plant’s product portfolio, improve product quality, and reduce operating and maintenance costs. The project is expected to lift the mill’s capacity by 500,000 metric tons per year.
