Morgan Construction Co. has received an order from Mittal Steel Newcastle Works, South Africa, for an upgrade to the company’s twin-strand Morgan wire mill. The contract was signed with Morgan-Europe, Morgan’s subsidiary in Sheffield, England.

Morgan’s scope of supply comprises the upgrading and automation of two existing Morgan vertical compactors. With the new equipment, coils, which were previously strapped manually, will now be bound with wire ties through an automated process. This will reduce the number of operators, which will improve operating costs while also providing consistency of operation. The use of wire ties, rather than the previous strapping, will also yield a reduction in operating cost.

The mill produces low- and high-carbon products from 5.5 to 14.5 mm at 95 meters per second at a rate of more than 700,000 tonnes annually.

The turnkey installation is expected to completed by the end of 2005.
