Missouri Legislators Open Special Session Debate on Bill to Aid Mill Project
05/22/2017 - After adjourning their regular legislative session earlier this month, Missouri lawmakers were summoned back to the capital on Monday to debate a bill aimed at luring a new steel mill to the state’s southeast region.
According to the Associated Press, the bill would allow utilities to set electricity rates below the cost of service for specific industrial users. Without the measure, Missouri stands to be disqualified as the home of an US$82 million to US$100 million steel project, according to legislators who say that the mill operator won’t set up shop there unless it can negotiate better power rates.
The operator hasn’t been identified publicly, but the bill’s sponsor said the mill could potentially create 95 new jobs.
