MIDREX Highlights Plant Operations Achievements
07/01/2021 - MIDREX direct reduction plants globally produced 65.7 million tons of hot and cold direct reduced iron (DRI) and hot briquetted iron in 2020, the company has said.
According to MIDREX’s newly published tally of plant production, its plants continued to account for approximately 80% of shaft-furnace-based production globally. Also during the year, a number of MIDREX plants achieved operational records and reached new operating benchmarks.
For example, voestalpine’s Texas unit set a new monthly production record in December 2020, and the ArcelorMittal Lázaro Cárdenas plant produced 19% over its annual rated capacity of 1.2 million tons in its 23rd year of operation.
Nucor Corp's module in Trinidad and Tobago set a new monthly production record in October 2020, reaching an average production rate of 225 tons/hour. It also achieved the highest average DRI metallization rate among all MIDREX plants in 2020, reaching 96.2%, with 2.75% carbon content.
