Mexican Steelmaker Orders Acid-Free "Pickling" Line

According to U.S.-based The Material Works Ltd., which developed the technology behind the acid-free EPS descalers, the Talleres y Aceros line will be capable of processing strip up to 1.9 mm thick and 1,830 mm wide. The line is scheduled to be put into service in the first quarter of 2017.

Talleres y Aceros CEO Oscar Chahín Trueba said in a statement that the company ordered an EPS line because of its efficiency and sustainability.

“EPS is the natural fit because it produces a much better surface finish than acid pickling. It is more efficient, and it has no wastes or negative impacts on the environment. And it is proven technology,” he said.

The patented process uses water and fine steel grit in lieu of acid to remove mill scale from coil surfaces. The process also eliminates the need for the oiling that is part of the acid pickling process. The Material Works licenses the technology U.S.-basedRed Bud Industries, which will build the new line.

In addition to the EPS cells, the line will include a coil staging and loading system, an uncoiler, a peeler/breaker, an entry crop shear, a stitcher, a strip dryer, an electrostatic oiler to be used for the occasional requests for oiled EPS, an exit crop shear, a tension stand, a recoiler, and an exit coil staging and packaging area.

The line will be specially configured to process the thin strip produced by the mill’s Castrip LLC thin-strip caster.

The Material Works said the line will be its second EPS line in Mexico. Steel Technologies de Mexico has run a four-cell EPS coil line at a facility near Monterrey, Mexico, since 2013.
