Metso Outotec Goes Green With Circored

According to the company, no fossil fuels are required for the reduction of fines.

The Circored process produces highly metalized direct reduced iron or hot briquetted iron that can be used directly as feed material in electric arc furnaces for carbon-free steelmaking. The process involves a two-stage reactor configuration with a circulating fluidized bed followed by a bubbling fluidized bed downstream.

“We are very excited about the Circored process. It is an emissions- and cost-efficient alternative to traditional steelmaking routes,” said Attaul Ahmad, vice president, ferrous and heat transfer at Metso Outotec.

Ahmad said the process “eliminates the need for costly and energy-intensive pelletizing, and its functionality and performance have been proven in an industrial-scale demonstration plant.”

According to Metso Outotec, the typical plant capacity is 1.25 Mt/year per line.
