Metinvest Shuts Down Ukrainian Coking Coal Mine

“Pokrovske Coal is the energy heart of Ukrainian metallurgy, providing a significant share of export revenues to Ukraine's budget. However, faced with a deteriorating security situation, we cannot risk the lives of thousands of employees and their families,” said Metinvest chief executive officer Yuriy Ryzhenkov.

“We believe in Ukraine’s victory, in the strength of our armed forces, and we are prepared to resume operations at Pokrovske Coal and rebuild Pokrovsk after the Russian invasion is repelled,” he added.

According to The Kyiv Independent, the mine is one of Eastern Europe’s largest and Ukraine’s sole producer of coking coal. Metinvest said it will replace the lost coal and coke production with imports from Metinvest’s United Coal Co. in the U.S., recently accumulated coal stocks, and shipments from third-party suppliers.
