Metinvest Decommissions Two Coke Batteries at Azovstal
10/17/2012 - Metinvest is set to decommission two coking batteries (#6 and #7) at its Azovstal Iron and Steel Works in Ukraine.
Metinvest will decommission two coking batteries (#6 and #7) at its Azovstal Iron and Steel Works in Ukraine. This will be possible thanks to the successful completion of the next phase of the start-up operations at the company’s new pulverized coal injection facility (PCI) at its Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol (MMKI).
The introduction of PCI technology at MMKI enables the company to reduce its coke consumption significantly. This will allow Metinvest to optimize its coke capacity and allow the decommissioning of batteries #6 and #7 at Azovstal to commence ahead of schedule.
The operating personnel of the decommissioned equipment will be distributed to fill existing vacant positions at the plant. Early decommissioning of three coking batteries (coking battery #5 was decommissioned in June this year) will be a significant contribution to improving Mariupol’s environmental situation.
The decommissioning of coking batteries #6 and #7 is being planned through the end of this month. Preparations are in progress at the enterprise.
Thus, Metinvest, as a socially responsible company, consistently delivers on its obligations to reduce man-made burdens on the environment of the city, the company says.
