Metalloinvest Partners With Primetals Technologies, Midrex on HBI Plant
10/21/2021 - According to Midrex Technologies Inc., the three companies have signed a contract for construction of what they are reporting will be the world’s largest hot briquetted iron (HBI) facility in Gubkin, Russia.
The US$600 million plant (HBI-4) at Lebedinsky GOK (LGOK) will be designed to produce 2.08 million metric tons of HBI per year. It is expected to be operational in 2025.
The plant can be converted to use up to 100% hydrogen as a reducing agent. It will include a 7.15-m-diameter MIDREX shaft furnace and a MIDREX reformer that uses low-NOx burners. The scope of supply for Midrex and Primetals Technologies will include engineering, supply of main technological equipment, supervision services, and level 1 and level 2 automation systems.
The three companies have already successfully started up two other HBI plants at Lebedinsky GOK.
