Metalloinvest Implements Climate Action International Program

As part of the programme, the company collects, calculates and provides data about greenhouse gas emissions from its production operations.

The Climate Action data collection programme lies at the heart of the global initiative to reduce CO2 emissions in the steel industry. Through its participation in the programme, Metalloinvest produces calculations according to the methodology and standards developed by the World Steel Association (worldsteel). Comparing its data with other businesses allows the company to establish more effective ways of reducing its CO2 emissions.

The results have already been received during the implementation of the Climate Action programme at Metalloinvest’s enterprises and show that CO2 emissions at OEMK are 100% lower than the average levels at other full-cycle steel plants. The decrease in emissions is the result of adopting technologies for the direct reduction of iron (DRI).

Andrey Varichev, CEO of Management Company Metalloinvest, commented: “The greenhouse gas emission assessment enables us to identify the most efficient technologies, which reduce our environmental impact. Environmental issues are always a priority for Metalloinvest. Our long-term participation in the Climate Action programme is now particularly timely given the provisions in the Russian Presidential Decree on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
