Metal Ravne Orders Secondary Metallurgical Center from SMS INNSE and SMS Mevac

The new facilities will comprise a ladle furnace and a 45-ton/60-ton tank degassing unit (VOD/VD).
With this new metallurgical center, Metal Ravne will increase its steel production and achieve additional production capacity in secondary metallurgy. The steel producer is investing in this installation to extend its product range to include stainless steel. This will open Metal Ravne new markets for a variety of additional steel grades and increase the company’s market share of remelted steel significantly.
“We decided to choose as suppliers a group of the best global producers of metallurgical equipment, the German SMS group and its subsidiaries SMS INNSE and SMS Mevac,” says Tibor Šimonka, president of the Board of Directors of the SIJ Group.
SMS will deliver a ladle furnace in line with a VD/VOD stand and install a separate deslagging stand. The plant will comprise a movable tank car and a stationary cover for the VOD as well as a stationary cover for the ladle furnace. They will be designed to treat heats with nominal weights from 45 to 60 tons. Also included in the scope of supply are the vacuum system, the temperature and sampling device, the electrical lifting system and the slewing gantry, a wire feeding machine, the electrical, instrumentation and process automation systems as well as erection, cold and hot commissioning. The secondary metallurgical center is planned to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2015.
“I am convinced that common trust between SMS and SIJ and a high level of technical competence will result in a new successful project from which all partners will benefit,” adds Alberto Bregante, chief executive officer, SMS INNSE. SMS INNSE S.p.A is the Italian subsidiary of the SMS Siemag. Its range of products and services extends from steelmaking to the finishing and processing of metals.
The main competences are in the field of revamping existing production facilities with innovative equipment for hot and cold strip production and the development of new process lines for skin pass mill and seamless pipe operations for a wide range of materials from carbon and special steels through to non-ferrous metals.
“For SMS Mevac, this project is the continuation of the long-term cooperation with the SIJ Group and its other steel mill Acroni,” says Michael Thiehofe, managing director, SMS Mevac.

SMS Mevac GmbH (subsidiary of the SMS Siemag AG) provides equipment, process know-how and additional services required for the production of high-quality steel grades. The range of metallurgical equipment covers vacuum-type and atmospheric-type treatment processes for hot metal pretreatment, secondary and tertiary metallurgy. Both SMS companies will handle the Metal Ravne order as consortium partners.
