Meranti Plans Green Steel Project for Thailand
05/18/2023 - Singapore’s Meranti Steel is planning to develop a 2-million-ton-capacity flat products mill in Thailand that will supply green hot-rolled coil to domestic and international manufacturers, the South East Asia Iron and Steel Institute reports.
Meranti founder and chief executive Sebastian Langendorf said the project will include a direct reduced iron (DRI) plant that will utilize natural gas and would be ready for transition to use of green hydrogen when available. The plant will also include a carbon-dioxide separation system, with the aim of carbon neutrality. The DRI plant will feed an electric arc furnace, continuous caster and hot strip mill.
The company is working with offsite renewable energy farms and a renewable energy partner, Lagendorf said.
Production is planned to commence in 2027.
