Mechel to Reconstruct Bratsk Ferroalloy Plant

Mechel OAO announces that Bratsk Ferroalloy Plant OOO has signed contracts with Siberian Plant of Electrothermal Equipment (Sibelectrotherm JSC, Novosibirsk) to purchase four ferroalloy electric furnaces.

Each electric furnace has a capacity of 33 MVA. Sibelectrotherm will also supervise installation and commissioning works. The reconstruction will take place during 2011-12. After the project’s completion, Bratsk Ferroalloy Plant’s production capacity is expected to increase by 30% and its power consumption reduced by 10-13%.

The project, which keeps the entire existing infrastructure, will be financed via credit facility provided by Sberbank. The contracts’ total value exceeds 1.9 billion roubles.

Sibelectrotherm is one of Russia’s largest enterprises specializing in production of electrothermal equipment for ferroalloy, steel, and titanium manufacturing.

Bratsk Ferroalloy Plant, which is a part of Mechel group, produces ferrosilicon—a ferroalloy used in quality steel production. The plant’s current annual capacity is 91,000 tonnes of ferrosilicon.
