Mechel Reports Accident at Nerungrinskaya Washing Plant

Mechel OAO announced this week the collapse of three thickeners at its Yakutugol OAO subsidiary’s Nerungrinskaya washing plant.

The incident occurred on December 26 when three of the plant’s 30 thickeners collapsed in the Nerungrinskaya washing plant’s washing shop. There were no casualties or injuries.

Works were launched at the site to restore heat and energy supply. Although operation at the coking coal wash shop was halted, the technological line processing steam coal is operating as scheduled so there will be no delays in supply to the energy enterprises.

In order to load the plant’s steam coal processing lines more efficiently, the company is reconsidering the overburden and extraction plans for the Nerungrinsky open pit. The group plans to step up extraction, processing and shipping of the SS-grade steam coal, which is in steady demand.

A special commission has been set up to determine the reasons and consequences of the accident.

Mechel, one of the leading Russian companies, operates in four market segments: mining, steel, ferroalloy and power.
