May Steel Shipments Dip Slightly from Previous Month

U.S. steel mills shipped 8,387,000 net tons in May 2005, according to the latest data released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). May shipments represent an 8.8% decrease from the 9,194,000 net tons shipped in May 2004, and a 1.8% decrease from the 8,545,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, April 2005.

A year-to-year comparison of year to date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:

  • Service centers and distributors, –1.9%
  • Automotive, –1.3%
  • Construction and contractors’ products, +2.6%
  • Oil and gas, +11.0%
  • Machinery, industrial equipment and tools, –2.3%
  • Appliances, utensils and cutlery, –1.6%
  • Containers, packaging and shipping materials, –15.4%
  • Electrical equipment, –6.4%
