May Steel Shipments Dip Below May 2006 Levels

U.S. steel mills shipped 9,087,000 net tons in May 2007, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
The total reflects an 8.2% decrease from the 9,895,000 net tons shipped in May 2006, and a 2.6% increase from the 8,849,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, April 2007.
A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:
- Service centers and distributors, -9.3%
- Automotive, -2.4%
- Construction and contractors’ products, -2.6%
- Oil and gas, -9.5%
