Mario Longhi of U. S. Steel Named 2015 AIST Steelmaker of the Year
04/08/2015 - Mr. Longhi and other industry leaders will be recognized for significant contributions to the global iron and steel industry at AISTech 2015
Mario Longhi, president and chief executive officer, United States Steel Corporation, will be named “Steelmaker of the Year” at AISTech 2015 — The Iron & Steel Technology Conference and Exposition, managed by the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST). The Steelmaker of the Year Award is presented annually by AIST to recognize notable leaders for their impact on the steel industry.
The AIST Steelmaker of the Year Award will be presented 5 May 2015 during the President’s Award Breakfast, one of the signature events of AISTech 2015. The breakfast program will consist of the presentation of several prestigious awards, followed by a keynote presentation by Lourenco Goncalves, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Cliffs Natural Resources Inc., entitled, “Global Iron and Steel Outlook.”
Mario Longhi joined U. S. Steel in July 2012 to serve as executive vice president and chief operating officer. He was appointed president and chief operating officer in June 2013, and was elected president and chief executive officer in September 2013. Under his leadership, U. S. Steel has engaged in a multi-year transformational journey, “The Carnegie Way.” In 2014, the company realized $575 million in Carnegie Way benefits and achieved the best financial performance since 2008, including $1.5 billion of cash flow from operations.
Longhi’s diverse experience and deep knowledge of the steel industry has proved crucial to U. S. Steel’s strategic planning and operational success. Prior to joining U. S. Steel, Longhi spent six years at Gerdau Ameristeel Corp., serving first as president from 2005 through 2006 and then additionally in the role of chief executive officer from 2006 until 2011. Before his arrival at Gerdau Ameristeel, Longhi spent 23 years at Alcoa Inc., which he joined in 1982 as a construction superintendent for the company’s Alumar Refinery in his native Brazil. During his time with the company, he advanced through increasingly responsible positions in Brazil, the United States and Switzerland, including tenures as president – Alcoa Wheels International, president – Alcoa Forgings Division, president and chief executive officer – Howmet Castings, and Alcoa vice president and group president – Global Extrusions. Longhi began his career in the metals industry in 1978 as an engineer at Cobrasma, a Babcock and Wilcox licensee for the sale, design and manufacture of pressure vessels for use in South America. Longhi earned a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering from the Institute Mauá de Tecnologica in São Paulo. Longhi serves on the executive committee of the World Steel Association.
AISTech 2015 will be held 4–7 May at the Cleveland Convention Center, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, and will offer a program with numerous technical presentations, keynote presentations by today’s business leaders, an expansive exposition and plant tours.
The Technology Conference will showcase more than 550 presentations on aspects of iron and steel manufacturing technology. Highlights include the latest environmental technologies throughout the iron- and steelmaking process; advancements in rolling and coating technologies; safe work practices and procedures for projects, production and maintenance; cutting-edge research and advancements in the processing, product development and application of steel; the latest in automation and control systems; and discussions on efficient material movement both within the facility and to the customer.
The Exposition offers attendees a chance to meet face-to-face with key individuals who specify, purchase, design, and operate a variety of plants and facilities associated with the production and processing of iron and steel. The 2015 Exposition has a total area of 265,000 square feet, and will feature more than 500 domestic and international companies for an unrivaled display of global steel technology.
AIST is an international technical association of more than 17,500 professional and student members, representing iron and steel producers, their allied suppliers and related academia. The association is dedicated to advancing the technical development, production, processing and application of iron and steel.
