March Steel Shipments Down 5.1% from Last Year

U.S. steel mills shipped 9,331,000 net tons of steel in March 2007, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
 
The total represents a 5.1% decrease from the 9,830,000 net tons shipped in March 2006 and an 11.7% increase from the 8,350,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, February 2007. 
 
A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications: 
 
  • Service centers and distributors, –8.4%
  • Automotive, –6.1%
  • Construction and contractors’ products, –0.4%
  • Oil and gas, –12.5%
