LINDARC Laser-Based Off-Gas System Delivers Results at GerdauAmeristeel EAF

MORE srl, Italy, recently installed its innovative LINDARC real-time laser EAF off-gas analysis system at GerdauAmeristeel’s Jacksonville meltshop.

The Jacksonville meltshop, which has a capacity of 1 million tons/year of rebar and wire–rod products, operates a 90-ton EAF equipped with a 90-MVA transformer. The EAF has operated since 2007 with MORE’s Module Technology chemical energy package, including burners as well as a comprehensive oxygen, carbon and pneumatic HiCal / Dololime injection system

The innovative LINDARC technology, with lasers installed on the mobile duct, just after the secondary gap, uses “Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy” (TDLAS) to perform real-time off-gas emissions measurements of CO, O2, H2O and fume temperature. A closed-loop system provides dynamic control of the chemical energy package and dedicated post-combustors to optimize CO, H2 and CH4 combustion into the EAF furnace shell.

The laser measurement technique guarantees precise and fast results in less than 2 seconds, despite very high dust content and high temperatures. The system measures the real off-gas volume, eliminating the need for the sampling, drying and filtering that are needed with extractive systems. The system features a sturdy design and high quality manufacturing equipment to support highly accurate and reliable off-gas monitoring.

The LINDARC system has delivered maintenance-free operation, and its optimization of carbonaceous fuels combustion has helped the operation to reduce its electric energy, oxygen and natural gas requirements.

The MORE and GerdauAmeristeel Jacksonville engineering teams are collaborating closely to explore further optimization strategies for the EAF practice, as well as to improve the operational safety and transformation cost savings.
