Lights On: Financing for Steel Mill Solar Farm Completed
10/06/2020 - Solar power developer Lightsource bp has secured US$285 million in financing for a solar farm that will supply electricity to EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel, the company has announced.
In a statement, Lightsource said work on the 300-megawatt Bighorn Solar project has already started and is to be completed next year. The solar farm, which will consist of nearly 750,000 panels, is being built on 1,600 acres at Rocky Mountain Steel’s site in Pueblo, Colo., USA, and on other plots. The mill will purchase electricity from the solar farm under a long-term contract with Lightsource.
“This collaborative project will not only bring more jobs to Pueblo, but also supports Colorado’s goal of reaching 100% renewable energy by 2040. The EVRAZ steel mill is a staple of Pueblo’s incredible history and will now also serve as a pillar of our state’s clean energy future,” Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement.
