Lighter-Weight Steel Use Touted at Auto Show
01/18/2013 - The benefits of lighter-weight, high-strength steel are on full display at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, the Detroit Free Press reports.
The benefits of improving fuel economy through the use of lighter-weight steel and other materials is often overshadowed by the buzz surrounding electric and hybrid cars, the Detroit Free Press reports.
But the benefits of lighter-weight, high-strength steel are on full display at the 2013 North American International Auto Show.
"We have the technology to support the automotive manufacturers, and we have the manufacturing capacity to do it," said Christopher Kristock, vice president of quality and product development for Severstal North America.
Ford said Tuesday it hopes to cut 250 to 750 pounds from its next-generation F-150 pickup.
The automaker said this week it hopes to shave the weight through the use of high-strength steel, aluminum or other materials.
Also, Chrysler said its heavy-duty 2013 Ram 3500 pickup can tow up to 30,000 pounds, or 7,000 more than the outgoing version, because of an upgraded engine and a redesigned high-strength steel frame…
