Lawmaker Wants U.S. Pipelines To Be Built From American Steel

Nolan, a Minnesota Democrat who represents the state's Iron Range, had introduced the bill in the previous Congressional session, but it did not advance, the Duluth News Tribune reported.

Nolan's bill, the American Pipeline Jobs & Safety Act of 2015, would impose new “safety standards” requiring that pipelines regulated by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to use steel produced in the U.S. and derived from domestic iron ore and taconite.

Recycled steel would be permitted, provided it includes U.S. iron ore and taconite, according to the News Tribune.

Nolan told the newspaper that dumping of foreign steel has led to thousands of lost jobs in the U.S. He added that foreign steel may not be safe, threatening spills that could cause environmental harm, according to the News Tribune.
