LanzaTech Wins 2013 Platts Global Energy Award for Sustainable Innovation

The award was presented by Platts, a leading provider of energy, petrochemicals and metals information, at its annual event in New York City on 11 December 2013. It is the second time LanzaTech has received the award and the first time the same company has won twice in the same category.

“We are very surprised, and equally honored, to be recognized by the team at Platts, especially given the incredible companies also considered for the award,” said Dr. Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech. “We continue to make progress advancing our synthetic biology capabilities to create an expanding array of sustainable chemicals while deploying our technology at a commercial scale. All of this is made possible by an innovative and hardworking team, as well as a growing number of forward-thinking partners and investors that see the incredible potential in putting waste carbon resources to more profitable and sustainable uses.”

LanzaTech has developed innovative technology that converts local, highly abundant, waste and low-cost resources into sustainable, valuable commodities. The patented process uses a microbe to convert waste gas containing carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide (from industrial sources like steel mills and processing plants) or synthetic gas generated from any biomass resource into low carbon fuels and chemicals.

LanzaTech has successfully operated two demonstration facilities in China that converted waste flue gas from Baosteel and Shougang steel plants into ethanol. Both facilities operated at annualized production capacity of 100,000 gallons. LanzaTech is currently developing two commercial facilities with construction expected to begin in 2014.

Earlier this fall, the Beijing Shougang LanzaTech New Energy Science & Technology Co. earned the sustainability certification from the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials. This was the first RSB-certified biofuel plant in China, and the first of its kind anywhere to receive this key certification for industrial carbon capture and utilization.

The company has also partnered with leaders in the global steel, fuel, chemical, aviation and petrochemical industries such as Siemens Metals Technologies, Harsco, PETRONAS, Virgin Atlantic, Boeing, Invista, Evonik and India’s Centre for Advanced Bio-energy as it develops competitive bio-based routes to producing a range of sustainable chemicals for use in everyday consumer products.
