Ladle Carrier Tires Explode at Severstal North America

Severstal North America, Inc. reported that twelve Severstal and outside emergency responders were injured when two tires on a liquid steel carrier caught fire and exploded.

Ford Operations Unaffected

Ford Motor Co. reported that the incident at Severstal Steel “had no impact on Ford Motor Company's production activities at the Rouge Center, including its Dearborn Truck Plant.”

The company noted that “two Ford Motor Company employees were injured in the nearby Severstal incident and were transported to area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.”

The company's preliminary investigation indicates that liquid steel erupted from the ladle and splashed on the carrier's tires as the carrier approached the entrance of the Continuous Caster building. The equipment operator safely exited the carrier's cab. Fire and emergency personnel were summoned to the scene to assist in efforts to extinguish the burning tires. The tires exploded approximately one minute apart.

Three Severstal employees were taken to local area hospitals for evaluation and treatment; at noon they were reported to be in "good condition" and scheduled for release later on Monday. Five other Severstal employees sought medical treatment for minor injuries and were released. Two Dearborn Fire Department and two Ford Motor Co. emergency responders were also injured.

The root cause of the incident, which occurred at approximately 9:10 a.m. Monday (March 21), continues to be investigated. Damage to the exterior siding of the Continuous Caster building has not been completely assessed but it is not considered to be major. The company reports that steel production continues at a reduced level pending relocation of the ladle carrier and completion of the building and safety inspection for the impacted area.
