Krakatau Posco Begins Operation of Plate Rolling Mill in Indonesia
01/06/2014 - Krakatau Posco's integrated blast furnace steel mill, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, began operations on 23 December 2013 in Cilegon City in the northwestern region of Indonesia’s island of Java.
Krakatau Posco is a joint venture company established between South Korea's POSCO, which has a 70% stake in the company, and Indonesia's state-operated Krakatau Steel, which has a 30% stake. Indonesian president Yudhoyono attended the completion ceremony commemorating the start of operations, indicating the country’s expectations for this steel mill.
The steel mill is scheduled to produce 1.8 million tons of a semi-finished slabs and 1.2 million tons of plates for use in ships, etc. per year. Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery delivered a rolling mill and a hot leveler that serve as the core of the plate production line. The company hopes that the plates manufactured with its equipment will contribute to the economic development of Southeast Asia, which continues to grow.
