Konecranes Safety Training Addresses Revised ASME Requirements for Overhead Cranes

Updated requirements from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) mandate that overhead crane operators and crane maintenance personnel complete appropriate safety training, evidenced by a certificate or formal record as described in para 2-3.3.3 of the current standard. Managers responsible for these individuals are required to provide this training.

Konecranes Training Institute is the global go-to source for a full range of crane safety training programs. The Institute offers practical, hands-on training in safe crane operation, crane maintenance and inspections, and train-the-trainer programs to prepare a designated trainer on staff for client companies. Konecranes can provide instruction at its facility in Milwaukee, WI, one of its regional centers or even on-site at customer facilities.

“These regulations were written in 2011 and became effective in 2012. It is surprising how many people interacting with overhead cranes are still unaware of them,” said Jim Skowron, vice president of sales for Konecranes Region Americas service division. “Failing to comply with these guidelines can open up organizations to potential liability if there is a crane-related safety incident and the investigation shows that the training did not happen,” Skowron continued.

Konecranes has produced a short online video that outlines the statistical impact of crane training. OSHA’s findings show that approximately 70 percent of accidents may have been prevented with proper training, and a further nine percent may have been prevented by proper maintenance.

“Konecranes has a vast array of training programs that are available nationwide to help support our customers,” says Skowron. “We have a complete catalogue of courses scheduled in 2014 and 2015 along with the dates and locations where each will be held.”
