Keep International Committee on Excess Capacity Going, World Steel Chairman Says
10/17/2018 - The World Steel Association’s outgoing chairman said a global body aimed at reducing excess steel capacity is making inroads and should be allowed to continue its work.
Speaking at the association’s 2018 General Assembly, Kosei Shindo said the Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity has so far been helping to improve the situation by providing for more transparency.
“The multilateral approach by the Global Forum to exchange information on crude steel capacity developments and government policies affecting excess capacity, including market-distorting subsidies and other government support measures, have been effective to date,” he said.
He said the forum, which is administered by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, should be renewed past its initial 2019 expiration.
