Kardemir Casts a Bright Future With SMS Group
02/17/2025 - Kardemir has ordered a 5-strand combi-continuous caster from SMS Concast, part of the SMS group, to upgrade its facility in Karabük, Türkiye.
According to the press release, the caster will produce various billets, blooms and beam blanks while accommodating a wide range of steel grades, including construction and high-carbon rail types. SMS technology will add features including the CONFLOW stopper mechanism, CONVEX mold tubes, CONSTIR electromagnetic stirrers and the CONDRIVE oscillation drive.
“It is intended to increase Kardemir’s production capabilities and enable it to react to changing industry demands,” the company said.
The machine will also include modern automation systems to control and optimize its processes. “[It will] ensure consistent quality, production reliability, and independence from the pulpit operator’s subjectivity, and assist with product certification to increase the plant’s availability,” SMS group said.
Kardemir and SMS group, partners for over 25 years, plan to continue cooperating on SMS’s digital solutions as part of the project.
“Our longstanding and trustful partnership with SMS group has enabled us to work effectively towards realizing this project. We are confident of achieving a swift and seamless project execution, setting a new standard in the Turkish steel industry,” the management team at Kardemir said.
They estimate the new equipment will be operational by the end of 2025 and have an annual output of 1.2 million tons.
