June Steel Shipments Slip Below May Totals

U.S. steel mills shipped 8,920,000 net tons in June 2007, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
 
That total represents an 8.4% decrease from the 9,739,000 net tons shipped in June 2006, and a 1.9% decrease from the 9,087,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, May 2007.
 
A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:
  • Service centers and distributors, -11.0%
  • Automotive, -2.8%
  • Construction and contractors’ products, -3.1%
  • Oil and gas, -9.6%
