July Steel Shipments 15.9% Ahead of Last Year

Sep. 19, 2006 — U.S. steel mills shipped 9,016,000 net tons of steel in July 2006, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

Total shipments reflect a 15.9% increase from the 7,781,000 net tons shipped in July 2005, and a 7.5% decrease from the 9,739,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, June 2006.

A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:

  • Service centers and distributors, +4.9%
  • Automotive, +17.6%
  • Construction and contractors’ products, +15.4%
  • Oil and gas, +9.7%
  • Machinery, industrial equipment and tools, +10.9%
  • Appliances, utensils and cutlery, –3.9%
  • Containers, packaging and shipping materials, +6.2%
  • Electrical equipment, +21.5%.
