JSW Steel's U.S. Operation Wins Conditional Approval to Upgrade Plate Mill

In a statement, the company said the 20-month project, which is contingent on securing public financial support, would make the plate mill a state-of-the-art facility and allow for significant improvements to product quality.

"With this modernization, JSW will become a low-cost producer of exceptional, high-quality plate and will be able to significantly increase market share in the ever-strong U.S. market," said Parth Jindal, director of JSW Steel’s U.S. operations.

"With the thrust on manufacturing back, JSW feels there is no better time to invest in the U.S. market. The JSW Group's consideration to invest in JSW Steel’s expansion represents a vote of confidence in the future of U.S. manufacturing," he said.

The company said it has chosen Danieli to provide the new equipment.

"Danieli is the perfect partner for the modernization because they have been in business for more than 100 years and understand the level of quality and precision that the project will require," said John Hritz, president and chief executive of JSW Steel (USA).

The company said the project is the first phase in what might be a broader effort. Under consideration, the company said, is construction of a new melting and casting facility. As it is, the operation sources slab from elsewhere and rolls it into plate and tube.
