JSPL Signs MoU for 1,000 MW of Carbon-Free Energy
10/20/2022 - In line with its goal to become a net-zero steelmaker by 2035, India’s Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (JSPL) has signed a memorandum of understanding with energy transition and decarbonization solutions firm Greenko Group to facilitate 1,000 MW of carbon-free energy for its steelmaking operations at Angul, Odisha.
The scope of Greenko’s work will include the design and development of renewable energy capacity, identification of potential investors for the renewable energy capacity and making energy storage capacity available. As part of the deal, Greenko Group will offer JSPL energy storage capacity from its Off-Stream Closed Loop Pumped Storage Project (OCPSP) under development in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Once completed, it will ensure the reduction of approximately 7 million metric tons of CO2 annually.
“We already have green hydrogen–ready DRI units present at Angul using syn-gas,” Bimlendra Jha, managing director of JSPL, said.
