Joint Taskforce Established for Teesside Mothballing
12/18/2009 - The National Steel Coordinating Committee and Teesside Multi-Union representatives have met with Corus to discuss the potential mothballing of Teesside Cast Products facilities. All parties have agreed to establish a joint taskforce to ensure that all alternatives to mothballing are fully examined.
The National Steel Coordinating Committee and Teesside Multi-Union representatives have met with Corus to discuss the situation at Teesside Cast Products (TCP).
Corus recently stated that an international consortium had broken a binding contract that led to the partial implementation of a proposal announced in May 2009, mothballing some of the facilities belonging to the TCP business beginning at the end of January 2010.
Corus said that the partial mothballing would result in the loss of about 1700 jobs, around 600 fewer than originally thought.
All parties have agreed to establish a joint taskforce to ensure that all alternatives to mothballing are fully examined; to continue appropriate preparations should mothballing be required; and to oversee individual consultations with the workforce, which will begin in January.
The taskforce will work with local and national government agencies to mitigate the potential loss of Teesside's core skills base and the effects on the local region and its economy. The unions will engage their own steel industry experts to assist with the process.
