Joint Project of SMS Siemag, Salzgitter Nominated for President’s German Future Award 2014
09/26/2014 - The Federal President’s Office has nominated three innovation projects for the German Future Award 2014 – Federal President’s Award for Technology and Innovation, including the joint project “Horizontal Thin Strip Casting of Steel” conducted by Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, SMS Siemag AG, and the Technical University of Clausthal.
The project has made it through to the final round. As the people responsible for the project, Ulrich Grethe, CEO of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH (project spokesman), Burkhard Dahmen, CEO of SMS Siemag AG and spokesman of the Managing Board of SMS Holding GmbH, and Prof. Karl-Heinz Spitzer, head of the Institute for Metallurgy at TU Clausthal, are directly nominated for the prize.
It looks like a close-run contest for the project teams. The jury will choose the winning team of 2014 on 19 November 2014, then President Joachim Gauck will award the winners with this major German science prize during a ceremony in Berlin.
To ensure the industrial-scale implementation of the project “Horizontal Strip Casting of Steel,” the Salzgitter group invested at its Peine location in an industrial pilot plant that is currently undergoing a successful run-up phase.
