Working together as a consortium, Tenova HYL and Danieli & C SpA have agreed with Jindal Steel & Power Ltd, India to supply the ENERGIRON ZR DR technology for four direct-reduced iron (DRI) plants to be installed at sites in Angul and Raigarh, India.
Jindal Steel & Power’s new DR modules are of a similar design to the one currently under construction for Nucor Steel in Louisiana.
Scheduled to start up in first half of 2013, Nucor’s new DR module will be the largest single DR module in the world to date.

The project comprises the installation of four 2.75 million-tonnes-per-year plants using the reformerless ENERGIRON ZR process. The plants will use syngas from coal gasification as the source of reducing gas but will also have the flexibility to operate with natural gas (or alternate gas), thanks to the ENERGIRON technology’s unique ability to utilize different energy sources for the same scheme configuration.
The DR plants, which Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (JSPL) intends to construct at various locations, will provide in excess of 10 million tonnes of highly metallized DRI direct-reduced iron annually to its steel plants. These plants foresee the installation of the HYTEMP System for transport of hot DRI to the meltshop, which has been proven to be of highly reliable operation in the DR/EAF plants at ESI in Abu Dhabi and Ternium in Mexico.
According to Tenova, the ENERGIRON ZR process provides low plant operating costs and allows the selective capture of carbon dioxide, which can be commercialized as a valuable by-product. The plant also will comply with the strictest environmental regulations.
Jindal Steel & Power Ltd is a leading transnational player in steel, power, mining, infrastructure and oil & gas sectors, spread across Asia, Middle East, Africa, South America & Georgia.
