Jindal Chooses GE Power Conversion to Help Triple Output of Steel Plants in India

The upgrade will boost production at the facility in line with JSPL’s plans to more than triple the steelmaking capacity at its Raigarh plant from three million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) to 10mmtpa by 2020. The increase in production will help meet the anticipated 4.5% rise in domestic demand for steel in India between now and 2015, even as new Prime Minister Narendra Modi makes plans for a series of ambitious, large scale infrastructure projects that will push India’s industrial base to new heights.

JSPL, the flagship company of the O.P. Jindal Group, is the largest integrated stainless steel manufacturing company in India and is the eighth largest manufacturer of stainless steel in the world. The Raigarh plant currently produces 3mmtpa of steel and its Steckel mill, which manufacturers steel plates via a hot rolling method, produces 60% of this. The plates, which are of 1500–3000mm in width and 8–120mm in thickness, has option for making HR Coils of width up to 1500mm and thickness ranges of 8–22mm. They will be used for various applications, such as railway wagons, ship building, infrastructure, wind mill, defense equipment and industrial pressure vessels by JSPLs customers. The company selected GE Power Conversion to provide an upgraded electrical system for its Steckel mill by replacing its current 3MW DC Machine with a 5.6MW AC Motors & Drives Solution.

The upgrade will improve the productivity of the mill by increasing the machine’s output and improving the quality of its finished steel through a more effective hot-rolling process. Working closely on-site with JSPL employees, GE Power Conversion will supply and install water-cooled medium voltage 3.3 kV MV7000 series drives that will allow the company to customize the speed and flexibility of the mill, and shift its output to meet capacity demand. The installation of 5600 kW 60/150rpm motors with GE ‘pin vent’ technology will aid air flow and avoid winding hot-spots, extending both the efficiency of the motor and the product’s overall lifespan.

“Domestic demand for steel in India is rising and we want to seize that opportunity and contribute to our nation’s growth.” said Mr. V R Sharma Dy, MD & CEO, Steel Business, JSPL. “As we execute plans to expand production at the Raigarh plant, it is best-in-class technology like the drives and motors supplied by GE Power Conversion that will help achieve our ambitions. Our mill can now produce more steel at a higher quality, and it will require less maintenance in the long-term.”

Renjith Nair, India sales director (Industry), GE Power Conversion, commented: “It’s an exciting time for Indian manufacturing and there is huge potential for growth across the sector. However, to maximize production it is vital that companies make the right investments in technology to optimize their systems and keep up with national steel demand. JSPL has huge plans for the future across the region and internationally, and GE is proud to support them on this journey.”
