Jersey Shore Steel Celebrates 75 Years of Steelmaking

Jersey Shore Steel of Jersey Shore, Pa., is celebrating 75 years of leadership in steelmaking.
The vision, commitment, and hard work that brought Jersey Shore Steel into being characterize the company today. Jersey Shore Steel founder John A. Schultz immigrated to America at the age of nine and by his early teens was working as a steel mill laborer. He rose through that company to superintendent and, by 1933, to president.
In 1938 John Schultz formed his own company to recycle, reheat, and reroll railroad rail into high strength, high carbon steel angle. The first rails were rolled 9 December 1939.
Continuous technology improvements have kept Jersey Shore Steel at the forefront of its industry. A major upgrade in the 1960s and plant modernizations in 2000 included both the mill and a new, computer-controlled furnace. This allowed Jersey Shore Steel to implement the use of land fill gas (LFG) from a nearby landfill to fire its furnace. Using this alternative energy source reduces the need for fossil fuels and removes a potent greenhouse gas, methane, from the environment.
In 2011 Pennsylvania State University documented the rolling mill’s negative carbon footprint. Jersey Shore Steel also has the least embodied energy of any steel on the market and is made from 100% post-consumer recycled material. These attributes make it the world’s greenest steel. Using Jersey Shore Steel helps customers green their products and offer consumers eco-responsible choices.
Jersey Shore Steel’s fabrication division, which was established in the late 1950s, incorporates process capabilities for custom applications and powder-coat painting with durable finishes.
Seventy-five years after John A. Schultz formed the company it is in its third generation of family ownership and JSS rail steel products are still proudly made in the U.S.A.
