January Steel Shipments Up 9% from December

U.S. steel mills shipped 6,579,808 net tons for the month of January 2010, according to the latest report form the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).  
 
The January total represents a 9.0% increase from the 6,034,538 net tons shipped in the previous month (December 2009), and a 43.8% increase from the 4,576,212 net tons shipped in January 2009. 
 
A month-to-month comparison of shipments shows the following changes:
 
  • Hot dipped galvanized sheet and strip, + 23%
  • Cold rolled sheet, + 14%
  • Hot rolled sheet, + 2%
 
AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. The Institute comprises 23 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 138 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
