January Steel Shipments up 5.9% from December

U.S. steel mills shipped 7,528,655 net tons for the month of January 2011 according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
 
The January total represents a 5.9% increase from the 7,111,031 net tons shipped in the previous month, December 2010, and a 14.4% increase from the 6,579,808 net tons shipped in January 2010. 
 
Year-to-date shipments at 7,528,655 net tons are a 14.4% increase vs. shipments of 6,579,808 for the first month of 2010. 2011 shipments for January would annualize at 90.3 million tons.
 
A month-to-month comparison of shipments shows the following changes:
 
·         Cold rolled sheet, up 19%
·         Hot dip galvanized sheet and strip, up 14%
·         Hot rolled sheet, up 5%
 
AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. The Institute comprises 25 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 118 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
